Montblanc Novelty Timepieces Introduced at SIHH 2015

Three months in the planning, it all finally came to life once I boarded my train from Milan to Geneva.

I had the honour of attending the 25th Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, Switzerland, as the official Montblanc Middle East blogger, covering the presentation for the new novelty pieces, the female Montblanc ambassador announcement and a private welcoming VIP dinner.

I’ve spent the past few months educating myself about these sophisticated instruments. From the different types of movements, complications and manufactures, I have somewhat a brief, yet strong, understanding about timepieces; just enough to hold a conversation for a couple of minutes, that is.

From the new collection, five timepieces stood out to me personally based on simplicity, functionality and craftsmanship, and here they are:

Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon Culindrique Geosphère Vasco da Gama

Vasco-da-Gama-3 copy

The Godfather of the new collection, this incredible timepiece is out of this world. Montblanc developers and watchmakers have once again employed all their expertise to create a wristwatch that is quite literally the ticking “flagship” of the new Montblanc Vasco da Gama watch collection. It was Vasco da Gama’s urge to discover new worlds and his unwavering courage that inspired Montblanc and spurred the Manufacture’s watchmakers to achieve superlative horological feats. Limited to just 18 pieces and valued at 250,000 Euros, the Villeret Tourbillion the displays double world-time with night and day indication for both hemispheres.

Montblanc Heritage Chronomètrie ExoTourbillon Minute Chronograph

As an horological highlight in the Heritage Chronometrie Collection, Montblanc’s new ExoTourbillon Minute Chronograph combines two of the most important chronometric complications: a chronograph to measure the duration of brief intervals and a patented tourbillon construction for absolute precision. Limited to just 60 pieces and, this beauty was by far my favourite at the Montblanc SIHH stand.

Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum

Simple, clean and an absolutely stunning timepiece. The complication of the Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum is simple to read and easy to use, displaying the time in different parts of the world in a practical and intuitive way. The dial is constructed in a multi-layer way. At its centre, the main sapphire crystal dial displays the continents as viewed from the North Pole which are encircled by the names of the 24 cities representing the different time zones.

Montblanc TimeWalker Urban Speed Chronograph e-Strap

Smart wearable technology is one of the most talked about topics in the watch world in the past months. In January 2015, Montblanc is the first luxury brand to combine wearable technology with fine watchmaking in the centuries old Swiss horological tradition. Montblanc Villeret Metamorphosis II

Montblanc’s unveiling of the new Metamorphosis II turns the spotlight on one of the most complex movements ever developed and designed in Montblanc’s manufacture workshops in Villeret, revealing the timepiece in a completely new aesthetic.

The functioning principle of the Metamorphosis II is as simple to explain as it is difficult to create : In the classic position, the timepiece displays the classical face of time showing the hours, minutes and date. A slide on the left side of the case is used to transform this elegant, classic indication, by revealing a new face. Additionally, the control device initiates a highly sophisticated mechanical process that transforms the dial with the classical time indication into a chronograph and new function.
